The Essentials: An Introduction to Off-Ice and Mental Skills Training
Off-ice and mental skills training isn’t just for elite skaters! Skaters who implement these tools benefit from accelerated skill learning, consistency in skill execution and reduce their chance of injury. From warm-ups to technique to performance anxiety, this workshop is designed to cover the basics of training – off the ice!
In the gym…
Over the course of the day skaters will be introduced to a variety of off-ice exercises to help them strengthen their technical elements and program components. In the morning we’ll work on tips and tricks for training the skaters’ jumps and spins on the floor, and focus on balance, alignment, strength and power. The afternoon will bring a more artistic approach while targeting the program components, through flexibility, core and stamina work. At the end of the day, skaters will have time to identify exercises to take home to help them improve specific elements in their programs.
In the classroom…
Mental skills need to be trained in the same manner as physical skills to maximize performance and build confidence! In this seminar, skaters will be introduced to the purpose and benefits of mental skills training. Skaters will develop awareness about the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that they experience in performance situations like tests and competitions. Skaters will be introduced to various strategies to help combat nerves and manage performance anxiety – including mindfulness, visualization, and relaxation techniques. The impact of self-talk on performance will also be discussed and skaters will learn practical strategies to improve positive self talk to maintain motivation and maximize performance. Skaters will be guided through the development of their own individualized mental skills training plan and introduced to ways that skills can be applied at home, at the rink, and at tests/competitions.
